La maldición del TITANIC

El hundimiento en 1912 del trasatlántico más grande jamás construido por el hombre ha sido considerado como una de las catástrofes que, sin lugar a dudas, más marcó a la sociedad del siglo XX. Sin embargo, son desconocidas la serie de extrañas circunstancias que rodearon una tragedia sin precedentes.
  la acumulación de misteriosas coincidencias, el insólito comportamiento de algunos pasajeros y lo absurdo de su hundimiento han servido para rodear la leyenda del Titanic de una aureola de misterio, que aún lo envuelve.
El 10 de abril de 1912, el Titanic zarpaba de los muelles de Southampton con 2,227 pasajeros a bordo, ante la admiración de una muchedumbre de curiosos que contemplaban atónitos como aquella mole de acero se alejaba majestuosamente del puerto.
Al poco de partir, la tragedia daría su primer aviso: un barco sin rumbo aparente estuvo a punto de colisionar con el Titanic. Un pequeño sobresalto que enseguida fue olvidado, pues se estaba a bordo de un coloso insumergible.
El veterano capitán Edward Smith estaba eufórico. Sobre él había recaído el privilegio de realizar su última travesía comandando el buque más grandioso del planeta. Era el premio a sus veinticinco años de servicio en la White Star sin sufrir percance alguno. Nada hacía presagiar que aquel viaje fuera a enturbiar tan magnífica trayectoria profesional.
Además, por si su experiencia no constituía de por sí suficiente garantía, contaba con una tripulación de jóvenes y capacitados oficiales, entre los que destacaba por méritos propios el primer oficial William M. Murdoch, un eficiente marino de tan solo 27 años, al que el destino había reservado el papel de fatídico protagonista en la trágica historia.
Llevaban cinco días de apacible viaje. Entre los incidentes apenas dignos de mención figuraba la incomprensible desaparición de los prismáticos que alguien sustrajo de la cruceta de vigilancia, para desesperación del joven Reginald Lee. Por su parte, John George Phillips, el radiotelegrafista, atendía con evidente desgana los avisos de peligro que con frecuencia enviaban los barcos que navegaban por la zona; a pocas millas de donde se encontraban se había detectado un inmenso banco de hielo del que se desprendían numerosos icebergs, algunos de los cuales se hallaba en la ruta que estaba siguiendo el Titanic.


Tal vez por un exceso de confianza en la resistencia del buque, la tripulación hizo caso omiso de tales mensajes, manteniendo el rumbo sin reducir la velocidad, entre los 22 y 24 nudos. Y así siguieron, pese a la persistencia de los inquietantes comunicados. El último de ellos lo envió el California y Phillips, harto de tanta insistencia, contestó desairadamente: "Calla, calla. Tengo mucho trabajo".
Poco antes de medianoche, la sombra de una inmensa masa de hielo interrumpió la rutinaria guardia de los vigías. Cuando fue visto, el iceberg se dirigía irremisiblemente contra la proa de la nave y ya se encontraba a poco más de 500 metros. Era demasiado tarde. En el puente de mando, ante la ausencia del capitán Smith, el primer oficial Murdoch ordenó parar las máquinas e iniciar la maniobra de retroceso, una decisión sospechosamente descabellada para un barco de semejante tonelaje. El impacto no se hizo esperar y con un fuerte fragor de metal desgarrado, el iceberg abrió una brecha en el casco del Titanic, permitiendo la entrada de 450 toneladas de agua por minuto. El Titanic, la efímera gloria de una época decadente, se hundió completamente a las dos horas y cuarenta minutos de haber colisionado con el bloque de hielo, a 600 millas de Terranova, llevando consigo las vidas de 1,622 infelices que se precipitaron a las frías profundidades del océano.
Muchos son los enigmas que rodean este desastre. Podría decirse que estuvo marcado por el infortunio incluso antes de ser construido, como si su nombre aparejase una maldición presentida por muchos, en algún caso con una precisión pasmosa.
El afamado periodista William Thomas Stead fue uno de los que previó el naufragio del Titanic con meridiana claridad. De hecho, en uno de sus escritos de 1892, veinte años antes del suceso, describió la colisión de un gran buque con un témpano de hielo. En la desesperación del hundimiento, los tripulantes del mismo fueron socorridos por el Majestic, un barco que realmente existía por aquellos días, y que surcaba los mares capitaneado, casualidad, por Edward Smith, a la sazón el primer y último capitán del Titanic. Stead falleció en el hundimiento el 15 de abril de 1912. Su intuición no pareció evitar que su nombre apareciese en la lista de finados...
Pero las visiones del trágico acontecimiento no cesaron ahí. Seis años después, en 1898, el viejo marinero y escritor Morgan Robertson, narró en su novela Futility, con precisión de detalles, el naufragio que se produciría catorce años más tarde. La exactitud de los datos que ofreció es tal que multitud de investigadores han concluido que Robertson se adelantó a su tiempo estando en trance -no en vano allegados a éste sabían de sus facultades mediúmnicas-, observando los terribles acontecimientos que se desarrollaron aquella noche primaveral.
El protagonista de la novela es un trasatlántico llamado Titán, nombre etimológicamente idéntico al de Titanic. El número de hélices que llevaba cada barco coincidía: tres en total. El Titanic desplazaba 66,000 toneladas frente a las 70,000 del Titán. El primero medía 882 pies, mientras que el protagonista de la novela 800. La diferencia entre el número de pasajeros también resultaba inapreciable: 2,227 en el Titanic y 2,177 en el Titán. Pero las coincidencias no finalizaban aquí. La velocidad de crucero de ambos era de 24-25 nudos. En su viaje inaugural, el Titán también zarpaba de Southamptom, un día del mes de abril y se hundía a 400 millas de Terranova (200 millas menos que el auténtico) a los cinco días, tras colisionar con un iceberg, tal y como le ocurriera al Titanic. Para finalizar con este misterioso cúmulo de coincidencias, el número de supervivientes variaba en tan sólo cien personas.
Aunque algunas de las cancelaciones de billetes son explicables por diversas causas, el factor premonitor no conviene ser desechado en otras. Llevados por un impulso irracional, varios pasajeros anularon su reserva pocos días antes de la partida; otros se negaron a embarcar en el último momento, pese a lo costoso de los pasajes.
Coincidencias, casualidades, ironías del destino... Lo cierto es que el naufragio de ese mítico buque dejó tras de sí una larga lista de preguntas sin respuesta: ¿Por qué, pese a los siete avisos de extremo peligro recibidos por la cabina del radiotelégrafo, la velocidad del Titanic no descendió en ningún momento? ¿Cómo es posible que de un lugar de tan difícil acceso como la cruceta de vigilancia desaparecieran los prismáticos, indispensables para el vigía, hasta el punto de que al carecer de ellos no pudo detectar el supuesto iceberg a tiempo? ¿Por qué un marino tan experto como el primer oficial Murdoch decidió realizar una maniobra suicida, esto es, invertir la marcha de las hélices en un barco de singulares características? ¿Cómo pudo permanecer el Titanic por espacio de 25 kilómetros en posición avanti un tercio en sus tres telégrafos de señales, después de que el Capitán ordenara arriar los botes? ¿A qué se debieron las extrañas anulaciones y la navegación a embarcar de personajes importantes en los momentos previos a a la partida del barco? ¿Cómo es posible que un novelista norteamericano describiera en forma tan fiel y detallada el hundimiento del trasatlántico catorce años antes de producirse?. A esto hay que añadir la aparición de supervivientes, como Edith Haisman o el matrimonio Harrigan, que en ningún momento existieron en las meticulosas listas oficiales que elaboró la White Star, lo que es tanto como decir que, pese a haber salvado sus vidas durante el naufragio, tales personas "jamás" viajaron en el Titanic.

    Este artículo carece del rigor necesario para tomarlo en serio. Resulta que ahora a un señor se le presuponen "facultades mediúmnicas" (¿qué demonios querrá decir eso?) simplemente porque allegados al personaje sabían de ellas. Así, de un plumazo, alguien sabe de unas facultades que hasta ahora nadie ha podido demostrar, pero eso sí, queda de perillas para darle al artículo un aura de misterio que lo hace más atractivo. ¡Por favor! Y eso no es todo: también aparecen indezas como que (Morgan) "Robertson se adelantó a su tiempo estando en trance observando los terribles acontecimientos que se desarrollaron aquella noche primaveral" ¡Así de fácil! Como quien se toma un café en una terraza y se le ocurre decir que la gravedad no existe porque se lo ha dicho un pajarito. Hay muchas cosas de este artículo que se caen por su propio peso y que hay que fundamentar bien, mejor dicho, hay que fundamentar a secas, porque no lo hace ni por asomo. Eso sí, el que se lo quiera creer se lo creerá a pies juntillas. Como algunos creen en los milagros o en las visitas extraterrestres.

    El libro ya se que existe. He leído sobre él en sitios más sesudos que este. Pero de ahí a creer que solo porque exista tenga que ser fruto de un "trance" va mucho. Y seguro que describe con sorprendente similitud lo que pasaría varios años más tarde, pero creo que no deja de ser una extraordinaria coincidencia, perfectamente atribuible al simple azar. Más que describir la forma que luego se hundió el Titanic, yo diría que cuenta la historia de un barco que se hundió de una forma parecida a la que después lo hizo el navío de la White Star Line. A ver si ahora vamos a pensar que es más factible un fenómeno tan pocas veces (yo diría que ninguna, pero como no lo sé todo no voy a ser tan radical) demostrado a lo largo de la historia como es el saber lo que va a pasar en el futuro por inspiración divina que una simple coincidencia.

    Y se me olvida opinar sobre las preguntas que se lanzan al final del artículo. Se me ocurren otras del pelo: ¿Cómo se le ocurrió hundirse al barco si iba a matar a miles de personas? ¿Los prismáticos que estaban en un lugar de tal difícil acceso los llevo ahí una persona o aparecieron solos? A la primera la respondo yo y así deja de ser una "pregunta sin respuesta": El Titanic no redujo su velocidad desoyendo los mensajes que recibía porque, cuando el capitán Smith consultó a J. Bruce Ismay, a la sazón vicepresidente de la compañía naviera, si podía aminorar la marcha, este se negó porque quería establecer un nuevo tiempo record en cruzar el océano. Por ejemplo.
